El Dia de los Reyes ... Three Kings Day ... is celebrated twelve days after Christmas. It's the day the Three Wise Men (Melchoir, Gaspar, and Baltazar) arrived in Bethlehem to bring gifts to baby Jesus.

For members of Christ Church by the Sea, it's the day we bring gifts of chocolate milk and three kings cake ... Rosca de Reyes ... to schools in the neighborhood of our church. It's a big day for the kids and members of Christ Church by the Sea as we make this annual fun visit to our "adopted" school near the church.

The 2010/2011 season at Christ Church by the Sea concluded with the joyful celebration of Easter and the baptism of Annaleah! Following services, everyone enjoyed a hearty ham dinner with dozens of delicious side dishes. The meal was topped off with a special cake created by Annaleah's Dads chef-friends. The joyous Easter Season begins as Christ Church concludes its season for this year, to resume again in November.

A new casa for visiting priests is under construction at Christ Church by the Sea. Located to the west of the main worship area, a new foundation was laid with the huge concrete 'crane' reaching over the top of the church palapa!

Bishop Lino Rodríguez Amaro, Bishop of the Western Diocese of the Anglican Church of Mexico visited Christ Church in February 2011. He gave the homily and celebrated Holy Communion before a full church. Following services a light luncheon was enjoyed on the church patio. The next day the Bishop met with the Vestry and visited the local elementary school supported by Christ Church by the Sea.

Christ Church by the Sea has 'adopted' a kindergarten in the Puerto Vallarta neighborhood of our parish. In addition to bringing treats and goodies to the children for special holidays, the church this year provided sump pumps to keep the school yard dry and a video camera so the principal can document activities at the school for the Puerto Vallarta school system. The video camera was donated by a couple visiting from Seattle.

Margaret Smith from St. Dunstan’s, San Diego presents gifts of baby blankets and bonnets the women of the church have made for us. The blankets are gratefully received by our outreach person to Majesterio General Hospital, who delivers 10 layettes at a time to new mothers there.

It was a time for the wearin' of the green, a lot of grins, good food, and fun! Members and friends of Christ Church by the Sea got a head start on the celebration of St. Patrick's Day 2010 in Puerto Vallarta.

Several dozen folks met for a wonderful dinner of corned beef and cabbage and soda bread on Saturday, March 13th. The dinner was followed by a litany of mediocre Irish jokes from Fr. Jack and followed by fun and games led by Don.

A good time was obviously had by all!

Seattle Church Donates layettes to

Bethany Community Church in Seattle is home to the Bethany MOPS (Mothers of Preschoolers) are a group of about 130 moms. After hearing about the lack of baby layettes for needy moms in Puerto Vallarta, the MOPs organized a clothing drive at their church and in Seattle by bringing clothes, buying binkies, finding suitcases and most importantly, by praying.

The baby clothes were then brought to Puerto Vallarta where they were given to mothers of newborns at a local maternity hospital near Christ Church.

Christmas Eve 2009 in Puerto Vallarta was very special at Christ Church by the Sea as we gathered to worship and enjoy an extended social hour following services. The evening began with a carol sing, followed by worship and Holy Communion. Guest musicians joined us for the evening, making the service memorable. The fellowship hour extended to several hours as we enjoyed the sweets and entrees brought by all.

Holy Week, Semana Santa, at Christ Church by the Sea in Puerto Vallarta lead us through the transition from the joy of Palm Sunday, Maundy Thursday and on through the Passion to the celebration of Christ's resurrection on Easter Day.

Services included Holy Thursday with the tranditional washing of feet, followed by a Seder dinner. Good Friday offered time for meditation and prayer mid-day.

Easter Sunday we all gathered to celebrate the risen Christ. Following the service, more than fifty folks enjoyed goodies in our sunny courtyard at Christ Church.

More than fifty worshipers gathered at Christ Church on Palm Sunday, April 6. Highlights of the service included the traditional procession of the palms, where we walked from the patio area, outside to the front of our building, then back into the sanctuary of the church. The service included the blessing of the palms and the reading of the Passion with the congregation participating in various roles as George Fulton was the narrator.

The Bishop of the Western Diocese of the Diocese of Mexico visited Christ Church in February. Bishop Lino and his wife, Father Miguel, and Joel Carcias, the Treasurer of the Diocese, worshiped at Christ Church by the Sea in Puerto Vallarta on Sunday, February 8. Bishop Lino blessed our altar and church furnishings. There was an expanded social hour following the joyful service.

Allan and Anne Affleck celebrated 50 years of marriage and renewal of their marriage vows at Iglesia Cristo Del Mar on February 18, 2009.

In addition to Allan and Anne, their four children, their spouses and their combined eight children (Allan and Anne's grandchildren) were all in Puerto Vallarta for that week and present for the celebration. Thus the group photo has 18 family members plus Fr. Jack.

In Allan's words, "It is a testimonial to the Anglican/Episcopal church being a 'home away from home' wherever one travels. Cristo del Mar has established that feeling for our family."

The Feast of the Presentation of Jesus at the Temple celebrates an early episode in the life of Jesus, and falls on or around 2 February. In the churches of the Anglican Communion it is known by various names, including The Presentation of Our Lord Jesus Christ in The Temple (Candlemas). In Mexico, Candlemas (Spanish: Día de La Candelaria) is celebrated at a gathering with Tamales.

Tradition indicates that on January 5, the night before Three Kings Day (the Epiphany), whoever gets one or more of the few plastic or metal dolls (originally coins) buried within the Rosca de Reyes (the Three Kings Cake) must throw a party on Candlemas. [... from Wikipedia]

And so it was that members of Christ Church By The Sea gathered for the second year at a member's home on February 2, 2009 to celebrate the holiday with tamales and fellowship.

Epiphany | Three Kings Day 2009

On January 4, 2009 we celebrated Epiphany, the manifestation of Christ to the Gentiles as represented by the Magi. And we welcomed baby Eva into God's kingdom through the sacrament of Baptism. Later in the week, on Three Kings Day, Fr. Jack and members brought cake and milk to hundreds of schoolchildren in our area, as well as some gardening tools for the schools!

We celebrated the birth of Christ Christmas Eve at Iglesia Cristo Del Mar - Christ Church by the Sea, followed by a fellowship hour with some delicious treats!

On Christmas Day 2008 we gathered for a social hour with George Fulton and then enjoyed an excellent Christmas Dinner at the Cuatro Vietes (Four Winds) Hotel in Puerto Vallarta. This was our second celebration of the Nativity in our new church home!
